  • 1 medium apple
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. celery seed
  • 1/2 tsp. dill seed
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/8 tsp. black pepper

Instructions

  1. Simmer the sausage in a small amount of water to remove some fat.
  2. In a large skillet, sauté the onions in oil and add a little water to stir fry.
  3. Add the rinsed sauerkraut, sliced apple, salt, celery seed, dill seed, sugar, water, and black pepper to the skillet.
  4. Cover and cook slowly for 15 minutes or until the apple slices are soft.
  5. Add the cooked sausage to the skillet and heat through before serving.

Tips & Substitutions

For a deeper flavor, consider using kielbasa or another variety of smoked sausage. If you're short on time, you can skip simmering the sausage. Substitute the apple with pear for a different sweetness or use fresh herbs like thyme instead of dill seed for a unique twist. For a heartier meal, serve over mashed potatoes or with crusty bread.

Serving Suggestions

This dish is excellent on its own but pairs beautifully with crusty bread or a side salad for a complete meal. For a cozy fall dinner, serve alongside roasted vegetables or creamy mashed potatoes. It can also complement a variety of sides, making it a versatile choice for family gatherings or casual weeknight dinners.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, warm in a skillet over medium heat until heated through, adding a splash of water if it seems too dry. Alternatively, you can microwave it in short bursts, stirring in between, to ensure even heating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use fresh sausage instead of smoked sausage?

Yes, you can use fresh sausage, but you'll need to cook it thoroughly before adding it to the sauerkraut mixture. Fresh sausage will provide a different flavor profile and texture, so adjust the seasoning accordingly.

Is there a vegetarian version of this recipe?

Yes, you can replace the sausage with a plant-based sausage or omit it entirely. For added protein, consider incorporating beans or lentils. Adjust the seasoning to enhance the flavor of the dish while keeping the sauerkraut and apple for that traditional taste.

How can I make this dish spicier?

To add some heat, consider including diced jalapeños or a pinch of red pepper flakes during cooking. You could also serve with a spicy mustard on the side. This will complement the flavors of the sauerkraut and sausage while adding a kick to the overall dish.
