Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 ½ cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 ¾ cups flour
  • 2 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 2 Tbsp sugar
  • 2 tsp cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Cream butter and 1 ½ cups sugar together.
  2. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing well.
  3. Sift flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt; fold into creamed mixture and chill dough.
  4. Roll dough into walnut‑size balls.
  5. Coat each ball in a mixture of 2 Tbsp sugar and 2 tsp cinnamon.
  6. Place balls on an ungreased cookie sheet, spacing them 2 inches apart.
  7. Optional: decorate with bits of candied cherries.
  8. Bake at 400°F for about 8 minutes until lightly golden.
