Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2/3 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Cream the shortening until smooth and creamy.
  2. Gradually add the brown sugar, beating continually to incorporate.
  3. Add the beaten egg and mix well.
  4. Beat in the molasses until fully combined.
  5. Sift together the flour, baking powder, salt, allspice, and cinnamon.
  6. Add half of the dry ingredients to the mixture.
  7. Pour in the milk and mix until smooth.
  8. Add the remaining dry ingredients and mix well.
  9. Pour the batter into a greased shallow pan.
  10. Bake in a moderate oven (350°F) for about 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  11. Serve hot.
