Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  2. Beat eggs well and add to the creamed mixture, mixing thoroughly.
  3. Stir in molasses until well incorporated.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine flour, salt, baking soda, ginger, ground cloves, and ground cinnamon.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.
  6. The batter will be thick at this stage.
  7. Add 1 cup hot water to the batter and mix well. Do not add extra flour.
  8. The batter will become thin after adding hot water.
  9. Pour the batter into a greased cake pan.
  10. Bake at moderate heat (around 350°F / 175°C) for 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
