Ingredients

  • 1 cup dates
  • 1/2 cup walnuts or pecans
  • 1/2 cup shortening, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup dairy sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon grated orange rind
  • 2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda

Instructions

  1. Cut dates and chop nuts coarsely.
  2. Cream shortening and sugar together.
  3. Add egg and beat well.
  4. Blend in sour cream and orange rind.
  5. Gradually add sifted flour, salt, baking powder, and soda, mixing until just combined.
  6. Drop spoonfuls onto a greased baking sheet.
  7. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
  8. Cool on wire racks before serving.
