Ingredients

  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 3/4 cup boiling water
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon melted shortening

Instructions

  1. Pour boiling water over the cornmeal and let it stand until cool.
  2. Add sugar, salt, and beaten egg to the mixture.
  3. Dissolve soda into the buttermilk and add to the batter; mix well.
  4. Add melted shortening to the batter.
