Ingredients

  • 1 small box raisins
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 1/2 cups water
  • 4 cups flour
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon cloves
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup chopped nuts

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease and flour a 17 x 12-inch cookie sheet.
  3. In a 2-quart pan, heat raisins, shortening, and water; bring to a boil without boiling over for 20 minutes.
  4. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, salt, cinnamon, cloves, baking powder, and chopped nuts.
  5. While hot, add the raisin, shortening, and water mixture into the dry ingredients; blend well.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared cookie sheet.
  7. Bake until golden brown, about 10 to 15 minutes.
  8. Cool slightly, then dust with powdered sugar or spread with cream cheese frosting before serving.
