Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. molasses
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 eggs, separated
  • 2 c. sifted flour
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. cloves
  • 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp. allspice
  • 3/4 c. sour milk

Instructions

  1. Cream together the shortening and sugar.
  2. Add molasses gradually, beating well.
  3. Add vanilla.
  4. Beat egg yolks and add to the first mixture.
  5. Sift together the flour, baking powder, soda, salt, and spices.
  6. Add the dry ingredients alternately with milk to the cream mixture.
  7. Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.
  8. Bake in two greased 8-inch layer pans in a 375° oven for 35 minutes.
