Ingredients

  • 2 lb. beef (chuck), cubed
  • shortening
  • 3 onions, chopped
  • water
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 scant Tbsp. lemon juice
  • 2 small bay leaves
  • salt and pepper

Instructions

  1. Brown the beef in hot shortening.
  2. Add chopped onions and enough water to nearly cover the meat.
  3. Mix sugar and cinnamon with lemon juice and add to the pot along with bay leaves, salt, and pepper.
  4. Cover and bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat and simmer until the meat is tender, about 2 hours.
