Ingredients

  • 1 cup split peas or lentils
  • 1 pound hamburger
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • other seasonings as desired
  • 3 cups whole tomatoes
  • 3 to 4 diced carrots
  • 3 to 4 diced celery stalks

Instructions

  1. Simmer split peas in 1 quart of water for 1/2 to 3/4 hour, until tender.
  2. Drain the cooked split peas.
  3. Fry together hamburger and chopped onion until browned.
  4. Add salt and other seasonings as desired.
  5. Mix in whole tomatoes, diced carrots, and diced celery stalks.
  6. Add the drained split peas to the mixture and combine thoroughly.
  7. Transfer everything to a covered casserole dish.
  8. Bake at 350°F for 1 1/2 hours.
