Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour, sifted
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 cup walnuts, chopped

Instructions

  1. Sift flour, sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg together.
  2. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse cornmeal.
  3. Reserve 1/2 cup of this mixture for topping.
  4. Combine buttermilk and baking soda.
  5. Add the buttermilk mixture to the dry ingredients in halves, beating thoroughly after each addition.
  6. Stir in raisins and chopped walnuts.
  7. Spread the batter in a greased and floured 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan.
  8. Sprinkle the reserved crumbs over the top.
  9. Bake at 350°F for 1 hour or until done.
