Strietzel is a traditional yeast-based sweet bread infused with lemon zest, raisins, and a hint of sweetness, perfect for breakfast or sharing at celebrations.

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp yeast
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3 Tbsp oil
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup white raisins
  • Lemon rind
  • Lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Heat water and milk to 130°F.
  2. Mix yeast, salt, sugar, oil, egg, and half of the flour in a bowl.
  3. Drizzle the heated liquids into the bowl, mixing with a beater until smooth.
  4. Stir in lemon rind, lemon juice, and raisins.
  5. Stir or knead in remaining flour until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  6. Let the dough rise until doubled in size.
  7. Knead and shape the dough into loaves, either round or braided.
  8. Let the shaped loaves rise until doubled.
  9. Brush the loaves with 1 beaten egg.
  10. Bake at 350°F for 20 to 25 minutes, depending on the size of the loaves.
