Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup softened butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 5 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1 slightly beaten egg white
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans

Instructions

  1. Sprinkle dry yeast into warm water and let it stand until foamy.
  2. Combine milk, 1/2 cup sugar, butter, and salt in a saucepan; stir until butter is melted and sugar is dissolved, then cool until warm.
  3. Stir in 2 cups of flour.
  4. Add softened yeast, egg yolk, and ground cardamom; beat vigorously until well combined.
  5. Stir in 3 cups of flour, adding more as necessary for kneading.
  6. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 8 to 10 minutes.
  7. Shape dough into a ball and place in a lightly greased bowl, turning once to grease surface.
