Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 3/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Combine dry ingredients, mixing well.
  2. Cut in butter with a pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse meal.
  3. Add buttermilk, stirring until dry ingredients are moistened.
  4. Shape dough into a ball and knead lightly 4 or 5 times.
  5. Roll dough to 1/2-inch thickness on a lightly floured surface.
  6. Cut with a 1 3/4-inch biscuit cutter and place on ungreased baking sheet.
  7. Brush lightly with milk.
  8. Bake at 400° for 12 to 15 minutes.
