- Mix egg, sugar, and oil together in a bowl.
- Combine flour (save out 1/4 cup), soda, cloves, cinnamon, and allspice in a separate bowl.
- Add salt to the dry ingredients.
- Alternate adding dry ingredients and applesauce to the wet mixture, mixing well after each addition.
- Coat the raisins and nuts with the reserved 1/4 cup flour, then fold into the batter.
- Pour the batter into a greased and floured 9 x 13-inch oblong pan.
- Bake at 300°F (150°C) for 60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Spread with caramel icing once cooled.
