Ingredients

  • 6 green tomatoes
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 3/4 cup sifted flour
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • Chopped nuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cut green tomatoes into small wedges and place in a large bowl.
  2. Mix 1/2 cup sugar and ground cloves, cinnamon, and lemon juice together.
  3. Sprinkle the spice mixture over the tomatoes and toss well.
  4. Spread the tomato mixture evenly into a buttered 1 1/2-quart casserole.
  5. Blend remaining 1/2 cup sugar, sifted flour, salt, and butter into crumbs.
  6. Mix in chopped nuts and sprinkle over the top of the tomato mixture.
  7. Bake in an oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 35 minutes until golden and bubbly.
