Ingredients

  • 1 package caramels
  • 1 cup sweetened condensed milk, divided
  • 1 German chocolate cake mix
  • 1 1/2 sticks margarine
  • 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup nuts (optional)
  • 6 oz chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Melt the package of caramels with 1/2 cup of sweetened condensed milk.
  2. Mix the German chocolate cake mix with margarine and 1/2 cup of sweetened condensed milk until well combined.
  3. Spread less than half of the batter evenly into a greased 9 x 13-inch pan.
  4. Bake for 6 minutes at 350°F (175°C), then remove from the oven.
  5. Sprinkle the batter with nuts if using.
  6. Spread the melted caramel mixture over the partially baked batter.
  7. Sprinkle chocolate chips on top of the caramel layer.
  8. Mix the remaining batter with 3 tablespoons of water and spread evenly over the chocolate chips.
  9. Bake for an additional 20 to 25 minutes at 350°F (175°C), or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Allow the cake to cool before serving.
