  • 2 medium onions, chopped
  • 3 carrots, chopped
  • 3 stalks celery, chopped
  • 1 lb. turkey Italian sausage
  • 1 lb. ground turkey
  • 1/2 cup red or white wine (optional)
  • 2 (28 oz.) cans tomatoes

Instructions

  1. Saute chopped vegetables in olive oil in a large pot on medium-high heat for about 10 minutes.
  2. Add turkey sausage and ground turkey and crumble; cook at medium heat, crumbling turkey and stirring until turkey loses pink color.
  3. If using wine, add wine and cook at medium-high heat until most of the wine liquid has evaporated.
  4. Add the tomatoes (chop some of the tomatoes in the pot with a spatula, if whole) and lower heat to keep simmering.
  5. Simmer for one or two hours.
  6. Serve over your favorite pasta.

Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider adding a bay leaf or Italian herbs like oregano and basil while simmering the sauce. If you prefer a lighter version, substitute the turkey sausage with a leaner option or use ground chicken. For a quicker preparation, pre-chop your vegetables or use frozen chopped mirepoix. You can even add some chopped spinach or kale for extra nutrition.

Serving Suggestions

Serve this turkey pasta sauce over your favorite pasta, such as spaghetti or penne, for a hearty meal. It pairs well with a fresh side salad like Wilma's Italian Salad or garlic bread for a complete dining experience. For a twist, try it with polenta or as a filling for stuffed peppers, making it versatile for various occasions.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftover turkey pasta sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. For longer storage, you can freeze the sauce for up to 3 months. To reheat, thaw overnight in the refrigerator and warm it gently on the stove over low heat, adding a splash of water or broth if it has thickened.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this sauce ahead of time?

Absolutely! This turkey pasta sauce actually tastes better the next day as the flavors meld together. Prepare it in advance and store it in the refrigerator. Just be sure to reheat thoroughly before serving.

What type of pasta works best with this sauce?

While any pasta can be used, thicker shapes like rigatoni or pappardelle hold up well under the chunky turkey sauce. You can also use gluten-free pasta if needed, which will still complement the flavors beautifully.

Can I use a different type of meat?

Yes, feel free to substitute the turkey with ground beef, chicken, or even plant-based alternatives for a vegetarian option. Adjust the cooking time as needed based on the meat you choose.
