- Mix white sugar, brown sugar, and cornstarch together in a saucepan.
- Add milk and cook over medium heat until slightly thickened.
- Remove from heat and stir in butter or margarine and egg yolks.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly.
- In a separate bowl, beat egg whites until stiff peaks form.
- Remove custard from heat and gently fold in beaten egg whites, vanilla, and nutmeg.
- Pour the filling into the unbaked pastry shell.
- Bake at 325°F (160°C) until the pie is firm and golden brown, about 30 to 35 minutes.
