Ingredients

  • 6 to 8 large tart apples
  • 9-inch unbaked pastry shell
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup gingersnap crumbs
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • few grains salt
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1/3 cup maple syrup

Instructions

  1. Core and pare the apples, then slice them thin.
  2. Spread about half of the apple slices in the unbaked pastry shell.
  3. Combine sugar, gingersnap crumbs, flour, cinnamon, salt, chopped walnuts, melted butter, and maple syrup; mix well.
  4. Spread half of this mixture over the apple slices in the pastry shell.
  5. Add the remaining apple slices on top of the first layer.
  6. Spread the remaining crumb mixture evenly over the top of the apples.
  7. Bake in a moderate 350°F (175°C) oven for about 50 minutes.
  8. Heat the maple syrup to a boil.
  9. Pour the hot syrup over the baked pie.
  10. Bake an additional 15 minutes to set the syrup.
