Ingredients

  • Few whole black peppercorns
  • Few whole cardamoms
  • Few whole cloves
  • Few small, thin sticks cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2-1/2 Tbsp. cooking oil
  • 2-1/2 Tbsp. shortening
  • 1/2 pound chicken or beef pieces
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 5 whole, dried red peppers
  • 1-2 Tbsp. corn starch
  • 8 steamed baby potatoes
  • 8 tiny pearl onions

Instructions

  1. Marinate chicken or beef pieces with salt and set aside.
  2. Prepare a spice mixture with black peppercorns, cardamoms, cloves, and cinnamon sticks.
  3. Heat cooking oil and shortening in a wok or large skillet over medium-high heat.
  4. Add the spice mixture to the hot oil and sauté until fragrant.
  5. Add the marinated chicken or beef pieces and cook until browned.
  6. Add dried red peppers and cook for another 2 minutes.
  7. Mix corn starch with water to create a slurry.
  8. Add the slurry to the pan to thicken the sauce, stirring continuously.
  9. Add steamed baby potatoes, pearl onions, and cherry tomatoes.
  10. Cook for an additional 5 minutes until vegetables are heated through and flavors meld.
  11. Serve hot, garnished with additional spices if desired.
