Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter or margarine
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 3 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon mace
  • 3 cups apples, chopped
  • 2 cups walnuts, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy; add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  2. Mix and sift flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and mace.
  3. Stir in vanilla, chopped apples, and chopped walnuts.
  4. The batter will be stiff.
  5. Spoon into a greased and floured 10-inch tube pan.
  6. Bake at 325°F for 1 hour and 30 minutes.
  7. Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then remove to a rack.
  8. During baking, a macaroon-type crust forms on the top, so it needs no icing.
