Ingredients

  • 4 large tart apples
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/3 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 cup sifted flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. Peel and slice the apples directly into a well-buttered 8 x 8-inch baking dish. Sprinkle sugar and cinnamon over the apple slices.
  2. In a bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add shortening and milk to the dry ingredients and beat for 2 minutes until smooth.
  4. Stir in the egg and vanilla extract.
  5. Beat for an additional 2 minutes.
  6. Spread the batter evenly over the apples in the baking dish.
  7. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 35 to 40 minutes until golden and cooked through.
