Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 3/4 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup uncooked oats
  • 2 packages dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Combine water, honey, and butter in a small saucepan.
  2. Heat until the butter melts and the mixture reaches 120°F then cool.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine wheat flour, oats, yeast, and salt.
  4. Stir well to distribute ingredients evenly.
  5. Gradually add the hot liquid mixture to the dry ingredients, beating at low speed with an electric mixer for 1 minute.
  6. Add the egg and beat an additional 2 minutes at medium speed.
  7. Gradually add all-purpose flour to form a soft dough.
  8. Turn dough out onto a heavily floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 8 minutes.
  9. Shape the dough into 24 balls and place in a lightly greased 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan.
  10. Cover and let rise in a warm, draft-free place at 85°F for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  11. Bake at 375°F for 20 minutes or until lightly browned.
