Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups plain flour
  • 2 1/2 cups wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 package dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 cup Crisco (butter flavor)
  • 1/4 cup warm water

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, pour warm water.
  2. Add dry yeast and sprinkle about 1 teaspoon of sugar over it.
  3. Let sit until bubbles form and yeast is dissolved.
  4. Meanwhile, mix dry ingredients (plain flour, wheat flour, salt, baking powder, soda, sugar) in a large bowl.
  5. Cut in Crisco until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  6. Add a small amount of buttermilk, then pour in the yeast mixture and stir.
  7. Gradually add the remaining buttermilk, little at a time, until the batter feels right.
  8. You may need to add a little wheat flour if the batter is too sticky.
  9. Let the batter rest for a few minutes, then roll out on a floured surface.
  10. Cut biscuits using a biscuit cutter or glass to desired size.
  11. Place on a cookie sheet slightly apart for crusty biscuits.
  12. Alternatively, place in a Pam-sprayed cake pan, touching for puffy, high biscuits.
  13. Bake at 425°F (220°C) for about 12 to 15 minutes or until browned.
  14. Adjust oven temperature slightly higher if needed for browning.
  15. Remove from oven, butter, and enjoy!
