- In a small bowl, pour warm water.
- Add dry yeast and sprinkle about 1 teaspoon of sugar over it.
- Let sit until bubbles form and yeast is dissolved.
- Meanwhile, mix dry ingredients (plain flour, wheat flour, salt, baking powder, soda, sugar) in a large bowl.
- Cut in Crisco until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add a small amount of buttermilk, then pour in the yeast mixture and stir.
- Gradually add the remaining buttermilk, little at a time, until the batter feels right.
- You may need to add a little wheat flour if the batter is too sticky.
- Let the batter rest for a few minutes, then roll out on a floured surface.
- Cut biscuits using a biscuit cutter or glass to desired size.
- Place on a cookie sheet slightly apart for crusty biscuits.
- Alternatively, place in a Pam-sprayed cake pan, touching for puffy, high biscuits.
- Bake at 425°F (220°C) for about 12 to 15 minutes or until browned.
- Adjust oven temperature slightly higher if needed for browning.
- Remove from oven, butter, and enjoy!
