Ingredients

  • 2 pkg. active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 2 1/4 cups warm water
  • 6 or 7 cups Gold Medal wheat flour
  • soft butter

Instructions

  1. Mix together the warm water and active dry yeast until the yeast is dissolved.
  2. Add brown sugar, salt, shortening, and additional warm water to the yeast mixture.
  3. Gradually add the wheat flour, mixing until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Shape the dough into a loaf, place in a well-greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
  6. Punch down the risen dough and shape it into a loaf. Place in a greased loaf pan.
  7. Let the dough rise in the pan for another hour.
  8. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 40 to 50 minutes until golden brown.
