Ingredients

  • 2 c. white sugar
  • 1 c. shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 c. molasses
  • 1 c. cold water
  • 2 tsp. soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. ginger
  • 5 to 6 c. flour

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine sugar and shortening until creamy.
  3. Add beaten eggs, molasses, and cold water; mix well.
  4. Dissolve soda in hot water and add to the mixture.
  5. Stir in salt, cinnamon, ginger, and gradually add flour to form a stiff dough.
  6. Optionally, fold in nutmeats and raisins.
  7. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto greased baking sheets.
  8. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until done.
  9. Remove from oven and let cool on wire racks.
