- In a large bowl, combine sugar and shortening until creamy.
- Add beaten eggs, molasses, and cold water; mix well.
- Dissolve soda in hot water and add to the mixture.
- Stir in salt, cinnamon, ginger, and gradually add flour to form a stiff dough.
- Optionally, fold in nutmeats and raisins.
- Drop by teaspoonfuls onto greased baking sheets.
- Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until done.
- Remove from oven and let cool on wire racks.
