Ingredients

  • 1 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, mix brown sugar, 1 1/2 cups water, shortening, raisins, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
  2. Bring to a boil and boil for 3 minutes.
  3. Set aside to cool.
  4. Preheat oven to 325°F.
  5. Dissolve salt and baking soda in 2 teaspoons of water.
  6. Add salt and soda mixture to the raisin and spice mixture.
  7. Blend in flour and baking powder.
  8. Turn batter into a lightly greased and floured 8-inch square pan.
  9. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes.
