Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1/4 cup dark corn syrup
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup unsifted flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Combine the brown sugar, flour, corn syrup, vanilla, and beaten egg in a 2-quart saucepan.
  2. Slowly stir in water.
  3. Cook over medium heat, stirring until mixture comes to a boil.
  4. Let cool.
  5. Combine the brown sugar, flour, cream of tartar, baking powder, and salt; mix well until crumbly.
  6. Pour the cooled vanilla mixture into the pie shell.
  7. Top with the crumb mixture.
  8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 40 minutes or until golden brown.
