Tips & Substitutions

For a more intense anise flavor, consider adding anise extract in addition to the liqueur. If you don't have almonds, walnuts or pecans can be great substitutes. Make sure to chill the dough thoroughly before shaping to ensure the cookies hold their shape while baking. You can also experiment with different types of chocolate, like dark or white, for varied flavors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make these cookies gluten-free?

Yes, you can substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend. Make sure to use a blend that is suitable for baking, as this will ensure the cookies maintain their texture and flavor. You may need to adjust the liquid slightly, so monitor the dough consistency while mixing.

What can I use instead of anise liqueur?

If you don't have anise liqueur, you can replace it with an equal amount of anise extract or even a splash of vanilla liqueur for a different flavor profile. Just keep in mind that the flavor will change slightly, but the cookies will still be delicious.

How can I make these cookies more festive?

To make these cookies more festive, consider adding colorful sprinkles on top before baking or drizzling melted chocolate over the cooled cookies. You can also incorporate festive spices like nutmeg or cinnamon to enhance the holiday flavor profile, making them suitable for celebrations.
