Ingredients

  • 3 c sifted cake flour
  • 1 tsp soda
  • 1 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 c butter
  • 1 1/4 c sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 Tbsp whole anise seed

Instructions

  1. Sift together the flour, soda, cream of tartar, and salt several times.
  2. Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the well-beaten eggs and the anise seed to the creamed mixture.
  4. Chill the dough until firm enough to shape.
  5. Shape the dough into small balls about an inch in diameter.
  6. Sprinkle additional anise seed on a greased baking sheet.
  7. Place the dough balls far apart on the prepared baking sheet.
  8. Bake in a hot oven at 400°F (200°C) for 8 minutes until golden.
