Ingredients

  • 1 package (1/4 oz.) active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/4 cups sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 1/2 packages (7 oz. each) almond paste

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast and 1 teaspoon sugar in warm water in a large bowl. Let stand for 5 minutes or until bubbly.
  2. In a separate bowl, cream softened butter and 1 1/4 cups sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add 3 eggs, one at a time, to the butter mixture, beating well after each addition.
  4. Stir in milk and the softened almond paste until well combined.
  5. Gradually add the yeast mixture and mix well.
  6. Stir in the flour and salt, mixing until a smooth batter forms.
  7. Pour the batter into a greased or parchment-lined baking pan.
  8. Peel, core, and chop the apples, then arrange them on top of the batter.
  9. Sprinkle with remaining 1/4 cup sugar and cinnamon if desired.
  10. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  11. Let cool slightly before serving.
