Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup margarine
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 3/4 cups unsifted flour
  • 1 cup oatmeal
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 4 1/2 cups diced apples
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 3 tablespoons butter or margarine

Instructions

  1. Cream together the margarine and shortening; add the brown sugar and flour.
  2. By hand, stir in oatmeal, salt, and baking soda.
  3. Reserve 2 cups of the mixture and set aside.
  4. Pat the remaining mixture into the bottom of a 9 x 13-inch baking pan to form the crust.
  5. In a bowl, toss the diced apples with 3 tablespoons of flour.
  6. Spread the prepared apples evenly over the crust in the pan.
  7. Sprinkle the reserved mixture over the apples to form a topping.
  8. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 30 minutes or until golden brown.
