Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups rolled oats
  • 1 1/2 cups sifted flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts
  • 6 cups pared, sliced apples
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/2 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine oats, sifted flour, light brown sugar, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt.
  3. Stir in chopped nuts with a fork or knife.
  4. Cut in 1 cup of butter until the mixture is crumbly.
  5. Press half of the crumb mixture into a 9 x 13-inch baking pan.
  6. Toss sliced apples with lemon juice and arrange neatly on top of the crust.
  7. Dot the apples with small pieces of butter and sprinkle with remaining crumb mixture.
  8. Bake for 40 minutes or until the apples are soft and the topping is golden.
  9. Cool slightly before spooning into bowls and serving.
