Ingredients

  • 4 cups cooking apples, pared and sliced
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup Crisco
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2/3 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Combine the sliced apples, 1 cup sugar, 1 tablespoon flour, and 1 teaspoon cinnamon in a bowl.
  2. Cook the mixture over medium heat until the apples are tender.
  3. Pour the cooked apple mixture into a greased 9 x 13 x 2-inch baking pan.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix 2 1/2 cups flour, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 1 teaspoon ginger, and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
  5. In another bowl, beat together 1/2 cup Crisco and 1 cup sugar until smooth.
  6. Add 2/3 cup milk and lemon juice to the creamed mixture, blending well.
  7. Gradually stir the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined.
  8. Pour the batter over the apple filling in the prepared pan.
  9. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
