- Cream the shortening, then add sugar gradually, blending well.
- Add molasses and mix well.
- Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition.
- Add milk alternately with the sifted dry ingredients.
- Beat well after each addition.
- Pour the mixture into six greased and floured 9-inch pans, spreading to about 3/8 inch deep.
- Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 18 to 20 minutes.
- Cool the cakes and then stack with applesauce in between layers.
