Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter or margarine
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon mace
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 3 cups chopped peeled apples
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 3 cups sifted flour

Instructions

  1. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy.
  2. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  3. Mix and sift flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and mace.
  4. Add gradually to the butter, sugar, and egg mixture.
  5. Mix well.
  6. Stir in vanilla, chopped peeled apples, and chopped walnuts.
  7. Spoon batter into a greased and floured 10-inch tube pan.
  8. Bake at 325°F (160°C) for 1 1/2 hours.
  9. Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then remove to a rack to cool.
  10. Dribble confectioners' sugar icing on top and sides, if desired.
