Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups thick sweetened applesauce or jam
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/4 cup sour milk
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Cream the shortening and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  2. Add the well-beaten eggs and applesauce or jam, and beat thoroughly.
  3. Sift the flour, measuring it accurately, and sift with baking soda, salt, cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg.
  4. Add the dry ingredients alternately with the sour milk to the creamed mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.
  5. Beat thoroughly after each addition.
  6. Pour the batter into a well-oiled loaf pan.
  7. Bake in a moderate 375°F (190°C) oven for about 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
