Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 can (16 oz.) applesauce
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Instructions

  1. Sift together flour, sugar, salt, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, cloves, and allspice.
  2. Add applesauce, shortening, and water; mix well.
  3. Beat the mixture for 2 minutes.
  4. Add eggs and beat for 2 minutes more.
  5. Stir in raisins and chopped walnuts.
  6. Pour batter into two greased 9x5x3-inch loaf pans.
  7. Bake in a 350°F oven for 55 to 60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow to cool slightly before removing from pans. Slice and serve.
