Ingredients

  • 2 cups thinly sliced sweet onions
  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup cooking sherry
  • 2 cups shredded Jarlsberg cheese
  • 1 1/4 cups mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon ground pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
  • large round French or Italian bread
  • paprika

Instructions

  1. Saute thinly sliced sweet onions in butter until transparent, avoiding browning.
  2. Add cooking sherry and cook until reduced.
  3. Mix the cooked onions with shredded Jarlsberg cheese, mayonnaise, ground pepper, and garlic salt.
  4. Bake the mixture in an 8x8 inch glass dish at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes.
  5. Pour the spread into a hollowed round French or Italian bread.
  6. Sprinkle with paprika and broil for 2 minutes.
  7. Serve with crackers and bread.
