  • 2 Tbsp. oil
  • 3 Tbsp. onion, chopped very fine
  • 3/4 c. ketchup
  • 3/4 c. water
  • 1/2 c. vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. prepared mustard
  • 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 c. favorite barbecue sauce
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. pepper

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients except the meat in a saucepan and simmer for 5 minutes.
  2. Place 3 pounds of meat in a pan in the oven or crock-pot, cover with the barbecue sauce mixture, and cook.
  3. Bake in a 350°F oven for 2 hours or cook in a crock-pot according to your usual method.
  4. When done, pour off the water from the crock-pot. The meat will have lost its gamey taste and absorbed the barbecue flavor.

Tips & Substitutions

For a deeper flavor, let the barbecue sauce mixture sit for a few hours or overnight in the fridge before using it. You can substitute apple cider vinegar for the regular vinegar for a different tang. If you prefer a spicier sauce, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or some hot sauce. This barbecue sauce is versatile and works well with various meats, including chicken or pork.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the barbecue meat with a side of coleslaw or cornbread for a classic pairing. It also goes well with baked beans or a fresh salad. Drizzle extra barbecue sauce on top before serving for added flavor. This dish can be complemented by a refreshing E-Z Fruit Salad for a balanced meal.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftover barbecue sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. When reheating, use a saucepan over low heat, stirring occasionally, until warmed through. For a quicker option, you can microwave the sauce in short intervals, stirring in between to avoid hot spots and ensure even heating.
