Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup flour
  • 4 tablespoons cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup boiling water

Instructions

  1. Cream sugar and shortening together well.
  2. Add the beaten egg and beat well.
  3. Add the buttermilk and mix thoroughly.
  4. Sift together the flour, cocoa, salt, and soda.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing well.
  6. Add vanilla extract and mix.
  7. Finally, stir in the boiling water until smooth.
  8. Pour batter into a greased 8-inch square pan.
  9. Bake at 350°F until done, approximately 30 minutes.
