Juicy beef-stuffed cabbage rolls seasoned with sage and herbs, baked to perfection and served with tomato sauce. A hearty, comforting dish suitable for family dinners.

Ingredients

  • 1 large head cabbage
  • 4 quarts boiling salted water
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion
  • 1.5 cups cooked rice
  • 4 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1/2 cup fine dry bread crumbs
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon sage

Instructions

  1. Immerse cabbage into boiling, salted water until bright green.
  2. Brown the ground beef and chopped onion, then drain.
  3. Combine the cooked meat with rice, melted butter, bread crumbs, salt, pepper, and sage to make the filling.
  4. Place the filling near the base of each cabbage leaf, then roll up, folding the edges under.
  5. Arrange the cabbage rolls in rows in a greased 9 x 13-inch baking dish and cover tightly.
  6. Bake at 350°F for 30 minutes (or 45 minutes if refrigerated).
  7. Serve with tomato sauce.
