Tips & Substitutions

For a flakier crust, ensure your Crisco is very cold when cutting it into the flour mixture. You can substitute half of the Crisco with butter for a richer flavor. If you prefer a sweeter filling, consider increasing the sugar to 2 1/2 cups. To enhance the spice profile, feel free to add a pinch of cloves to the apple mixture.

Serving Suggestions

Serve warm, topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for a delicious dessert. These apple slices pair beautifully with Grandma's Easy Overnight French Toast for a delightful brunch spread. Consider offering a side of caramel sauce for drizzling to elevate the flavors even more.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftover apple slices in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place them in a preheated oven at 350°F for about 10-15 minutes until warmed through. You can also microwave individual slices for about 30 seconds, but the crust may lose some crispness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of fat instead of Crisco?

Yes, you can replace Crisco with butter or margarine for a different flavor and texture. Just ensure the butter is cold and cut it into the flour as you would with Crisco. This substitution will give the crust a richer taste.

What types of apples are best for this recipe?

For the best flavor and texture, use a mix of tart and sweet apples, such as Granny Smith and Honeycrisp. This combination provides a balanced sweetness and holds up well during baking, resulting in a deliciously tender filling.

Can I make the dough ahead of time?

Absolutely! You can prepare the dough a day in advance. Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and store it in the refrigerator. When ready to use, let it sit at room temperature for about 15-20 minutes before rolling it out.
