Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon soda
  • 1/2 cup nuts (optional)
  • 1 egg
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1 medium unpeeled orange, cut in eighths
  • 1 cup dates
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • scant 3/4 cup sugar

Instructions

  1. Sift together the flour, baking powder, salt, and soda in a bowl.
  2. Add the nuts if using.
  3. In a blender, combine the egg, milk, unpeeled orange cut in eighths, dates, shortening, and sugar.
  4. Blend well until smooth.
  5. Add the blended mixture to the dry ingredients and mix thoroughly.
  6. Pour the batter into a greased loaf pan.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Let the bread cool before slicing; it tastes better the next day.
  9. Serve with cream cheese mixed with powdered sugar and orange juice to taste.
