Ingredients

  • 1 cup cut up dates
  • 1 1/2 cups hot water
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon soda
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1/2 cup margarine
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Combine dates, 1 teaspoon soda, and hot water. Let stand until cool.
  2. Cream margarine and 1 1/2 cups sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  4. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, salt, and 1/2 teaspoon soda.
  5. Gradually beat the flour mixture into the creamed mixture.
  6. Fold in the cooled date mixture.
  7. Pour batter into a well-greased, floured 9 x 13-inch pan.
  8. In a small bowl, mix together chocolate chips, remaining sugar, and nuts.
  9. Sprinkle the topping mixture over the batter.
  10. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 to 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
