Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups sifted flour
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons soda
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 1/3 cup raisins
  • 1 egg, beaten well
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 3/4 cup molasses
  • 3/4 cup walnuts

Instructions

  1. Sift together the flour, soda, salt, and sugar.
  2. Add the whole wheat flour and mix well.
  3. Cut in the shortening until the mixture resembles coarse meal.
  4. Combine the beaten egg, buttermilk, and molasses separately.
  5. Add the egg mixture to the dry ingredients and mix only until the flour is dampened.
  6. Turn the batter into two greased loaf pans or round tins.
  7. Bake at 350°F for 45 to 50 minutes.
