A savory Moroccan-inspired pastry filled with chicken, almonds, and eggs, layered with flaky filo dough, fragrant spices, and topped with powdered sugar for a sweet-savory combo.

Ingredients

  • 4 chicken breasts
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/8 cup oil
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 6 eggs
  • 10 oz. almonds
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. sugar

Instructions

  1. Boil chicken breasts in water, oil, and butter until cooked.
  2. Remove and shred the chicken into small pieces.
  3. Bring the broth to a boil and scramble 6 eggs in the boiling broth until cooked.
  4. Grind almonds into fine pieces.
  5. Layer in a buttered 13 x 9-inch dish: first a sheet of filo dough, then eggs, almonds, chicken, then repeat eggs, almonds, chicken, and top with 2 or 3 sheets of filo dough.
  6. Spread about 1/4 cup melted margarine over the top of the layered pastry.
  7. Sprinkle with cinnamon and powdered sugar.
  8. Bake at 350°F for 45 to 50 minutes until golden and cooked through.
  9. Optional: sprinkle additional powdered sugar after baking.
