- Peel onions and cook in boiling salted water for 30 minutes or until tender yet firm.
- Drain and cool the onions.
- Slice off the top third of each onion.
- Cut out the centers to make cups.
- Chop 1/2 cup of the onion centers.
- Sauté the chopped centers in Wesson oil with ground beef and green peppers for 5 minutes.
- Mix the sautéed mixture with bread crumbs, chili pepper, salt, and black pepper.
- Fill the onion cups with the beef mixture.
- Top each with a slice of American cheese.
- Pour tomato sauce over the stuffed onions.
- Bake until the cheese is melted and bubbly, about 10-15 minutes.
