Tips & Substitutions
For a deeper flavor, consider adding a splash of Worcestershire sauce or hot sauce to the broth. If you want a spicier gumbo, increase the amount of pepper flakes or add diced jalapeños. You can substitute the shrimp with crawfish or even use chicken solely if you're looking for a different protein option. Make sure to use fresh okra for the best texture.
Serving Suggestions
Serve the gumbo hot over a bed of fluffy white rice for a classic presentation. It pairs beautifully with a side of cornbread or a green salad for a refreshing contrast. For extra flavor, add a sprinkle of fresh parsley or green onions on top before serving. This dish also goes well alongside Carrot Cauliflower Casserole for a hearty meal.
Storage & Reheating
Leftover gumbo can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. For longer storage, freeze the gumbo in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. To reheat, thaw in the refrigerator overnight and then warm gently on the stove over low heat, stirring occasionally until heated through.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make this gumbo ahead of time?
Absolutely! In fact, gumbo often tastes even better the next day as the flavors meld. Prepare it a day in advance, let it cool, then store it in the fridge. Reheat gently on the stove before serving.
What type of fish is best for gumbo?
Firm white fish like cod, tilapia, or halibut works great for gumbo, as it holds up well during cooking. Avoid delicate fish that might fall apart, or opt for shrimp and crab for seafood variety.
Can I make a vegetarian version of this gumbo?
Yes! Substitute the chicken and seafood with a variety of vegetables such as mushrooms, zucchini, and bell peppers. Use vegetable stock instead of chicken stock and add some beans for protein. This will create a delicious vegetarian gumbo.
